
PAUL A. BARRA
Paul A. Barra’s novel, Sgt. Ford’s Widow, published by The Permanent Press, was called “an extraordinary story” by NPR: “… compelling, suspenseful and moving novel,” “…. the writing is so evocative you can hear the silence, feel the heat, sense the danger, anticipate the final joy.”
SFW is also a finalist for the 2025 Spur Award in the Contemporary Western Novel category.
His novel, Westfarrow Island, also published by TPP, was called “exciting” by PW and was short-listed for the 2020 Silver Falchion Award. One of his short stories, "Assignment: Sheepshead Bay," was selected for the MWA anthology When a Stranger Comes to Town, released by Hanover Square Press in 2021. His novella, Death of a Papist, was announced as an Honorable Mention for the 2023 Black Orchid Novella Award at the Black Orchid Awards banquet.
Barra has had eight other novels published, plus many short stories. He is a former naval officer who was awarded the Bronze Star with Valor "V" and the Combat Action Ribbon for his service on the rivers of the Mekong delta, was a reporter for local papers, a high school teacher, and the senior staff writer for the diocese of Charleston. He and his wife, the former Joni Lee, have eight children and live in Columbia, SC.
